I am supposed to write about “Broadway shows” after I gain more experience and knowledge but decided to express something I have on my mind right now since today is the last day of my favorite musical, “Fully Committed”.

Broadwayについては、もう少し知識と経験を積んでから投稿したいと思っていたのですが、久しぶりに面白い！と思ったBroadway show“Fully Committed”が今日で最終日ということに気づき、Broadwayについて少し書くことにしました。

This is one of the most hilarious, energetic musicals I have ever seen. Jessy Taylor Ferguson, who I think is a fantastic actor and is well known for his character, Mitchell, in the TV comedy “Modern Family”, plays 40 characters in 90mins -nonstop! No matter how bad and crumby your day was, you cannot help yourself from laughing. You are guaranteed to smile when leaving the theatre.

まずその“Fully Committed”というミュージカルは、アメリカのTVドラマModern Familyで有名な俳優、Jesse Tyler Fergusonが1人40役をこなすコメディミュージカルです。あらすじとしては、大人気のレストランの予約係(電話番)であるSamが次から次へとかかってくる電話に対応してゆくというストーリーなのですが、その電話のやりとりを全部Jesse Tyler Fergusonが演じるのです。さすがTony賞に５回もノミネートされた俳優さんだけに、上手い。面白い。会話がテンポよく進みすぎて、一人舞台だということを途中で忘れてしまいそうになります。英語があまり得意でない…という人でも彼の世界にどんどん引き込まれてゆきます！  ミュージカルには行けなくても、Jesse Tyler Fergusonの面白さを感じてみたい方は、ドラマModern Familyを見ると分かってもらえるかな…

For those who have never been to New York, “Broadway” is one of the main avenues in NYC that runs from the north of the island to the south but is also well known as NYC’s “Theatre district” located near the infamous Times Square.. As you can guess, this are gets very busy so make sure to arrive early for your show

ところで、NYCでのBroadwayという通りはマンハッタンをカーブしながら南北に伸びている大通りなのですが、劇場街という意味も持っていて、日本では後者の意味合いの方が強いのではないでしょうか。　NYCでは特にタイムズスクエア周辺の、劇場がいっぱい集まっているエリアを指します。土日や観光シーズンは人口密度が高すぎで、NYCに住んでいる人は極力歩きたくないエリア。

In order to see a Broadway show,you need to get a ticket but it is very expensive if you buy it at a regular price isn’t it? Getting a discount ticket on the day of the show from TKTS is a well-known option but please be advised of the long line!  Alternatively, here are 3 tired and tested (by me!) ways to get affordable tickets:

• Go direct to the theatre’s box office first thing in the morning:

If you have a specific show you want to watch, you should go direct to the theatre’s box office in the morning. Of course it depends on the season and availability but you can purchase some tickets for 50% or less. It’s worth it to wake up a bit early.

• Lottery: Some shows have lottery events almost every day. Even if you don’t win, you might be able to purchase discount tickets at the theatre.
• Mobile apps: This is the easiest way to purchase discount tickets for someone who wants to guarantee their ticket without going through a line or going to the venue. Again, it depends on the show and time but they are usually selling a 20-50% discount. It is always good to have confirmed tickets especially when you are on the vacation.

さて、ブロードウェイミュージカルを見るにはチケットが必要。お値段は高いイメージがあると思いますが、安くなる方法もいくつかあります。例えばTKTSで当日のディスカウントチケットを取るという方法はよく知られています。ただ、繁忙期はすごく並びます！　そこで以下が私が実際にチケットを安く手に入れた方法です。

①直接劇場に行く： 当日見たいミュージカルが決まっているのであれば、朝に直接劇場のBox officeへ行った方が安く、短時間で当日券を手に入れられたりします。席は選べませんが、余ったチケットを一律＄４５や半額などで売っているのでとてもお得。もちろん時期によりますが、朝行けば意外と取れるものです。

②Ｌｏｔｔｅｒｙ： ショーによってはイベントの一つとしてほぼ毎日Ｌｏｔｔｅｒｙをやっているのでチェックしてみて下さい。当たれば格安で見られますし、外れても劇場に行って『外れたんだけど、チケット余ってる？』と言ってみるとディスカウントしてくれたりしたことがありました。(余っていればの話しですが。)

③携帯アプリ： 滞在期間も決まっているし絶対に予約しておきたい！という方は携帯アプリなんかもオススメ。私がよく使う『Today TIX』は2週間先までなど、予約期間が決まっているものの、手軽に確実にチケットを購入できます。お値段は常に変動しますが、大体２０－５０％ＯＦＦです。

There are various musical shows playing on Broadway all the time. Some people have strong preferences but for myself, I would like to see as many genres as I can. Although I am still a Broadway neophyte, I think each musical has its own specific meaning and attractiveness.  So, I will keep posting interesting information regarding Broadway in the future.

BroadwayはLes Miserable等の王道からアラジン・ウィキッドといったディズニー系、期間限定のものまで様々。それぞれに感動するポイントや、違う魅力があって、私は色々なジャンルを見るのが好きです。いつも心の栄養補給をされた気分になります。まだまだ初心者、開拓中ですが、また魅力的なミュージカルに出会ったり、お得なチケットの取り方などを見つけた際にはご紹介したいと思います。
