ニューヨーク生活を満喫していても、まとまったお休みができると、シティを抜け出したくなるものです。　そこで今回ご紹介するのは、NYCからのショートトリップでよく選ばれる都市、ボストン。 ボストンは街がコンパクトで周りやすいですし、ロブスターに代表されるように美味しいシーフードを楽しめるのが魅力です。そして、過去にアメリカ独立戦争や奴隷制度廃止運動の中心となった都市であり、観光がてらアメリカの歴史に触れることができるのも特徴です。

Living in New York is exciting but long weekends are good times to get out of the city. This time, I’m writing about a long weekend road trip to Boston. It is a very compact, easy to walk around city and you can enjoy delicious seafood as typified by lobster. You can also learn about American history while you are sightseeing since it was the main city for some important events that led to the American Revolution and the abolition of slavery, for example.

私がボストン市内に着いてまず向かったのは、Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum（ボストン茶会事件ミュージアム）。時間があまり無かったので、１つミュージアムを選ぶとしたらここかな、と。こちらは、普通に歩いて回るだけではなく、完全に体験型のミュージアムで、入った瞬間から1770年代の装いをした案内人（？）に羽とカードを渡されてタイムスリップ気分になります。

The first place I visited in Boston was the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. If you don’t have enough time and can only visit one or two museums, I highly recommend this. This is a type of museum that is highly interactive – as soon as you go through the entrance door, a guide dressed like a person from 1770 gives you a feather and character card because you will also need to get into character while walking around the museum as a 18^th century Bostonian.

その後の内容は実際に行った時のお楽しみとしますが、案内人と一緒にミュージアムの中を回りながら、しっかりとアメリカの歴史も学べるのでとってもオススメです！

I won’t tell you everything because it should be something to look forward to when you actually go but I’m sure that you will learn one important part of the American history and have fun at the same time.

次は、このフリーダムトレイル(辿って歩けば市内の主要観光地を巡ることができる赤い線。) を辿って行きついたQuincy market。

Next, I went to Quincy Market by following freedom trail, which is a red brick path through the city leading visitors to historic sites.

開業から190年にもなる歴史あるマーケットで、中央の棟では食事、そしてその周辺の棟では買い物ができます。特に中央棟の左右にずらーーーっと並ぶフードのお店には圧倒されるはず！　また、観光案内ブースもあるので、食事をしながら旅の計画を立てるのにも便利です。

This market has been opened for 190 years and you can enjoy both eating and shopping here – there is something for everyone.　You can also find an information center to plan your trip.

野外ではストリートパフォーマーが観光客を盛り上げ、季節ごとのデコレーションも綺麗なので、お散歩として歩くにも最適。この時期はもちろんクリスマスデコレーションがメインで、Blink! (光と音のショー)の時間にはライトアップが多くの人々を魅了していました。

In the open air, street performers and musicians entertain visitors and seasonal decorations feast your eyes. Last week featured Christmas decorations and “Blink!” a free light and sound show that attracts many people at night.

最後は、やはりシーフードについて！　今までロブスターロールには興味が無かった私も、ボストンのロブスターロールは美味しすぎて、1日に2個食べました！　ニューヨークで食べるロブスターロールはマヨネーズベースの冷たいのが多いと思うのですが、ボストンは溶かしバターが絡めてあるのが特徴！これが美味しさの秘訣でしょうね。

Finally, I have to write about seafood. Although I haven’t had any interest in lobster, I ate 2 lobster rolls in 1 day because it was so delicious! I think a typical lobster roll in NYC is made with mayo and served cold but the ones I ate in Boston were made with melting butter and very warm! Perhaps this is one of the big differences?

レストランで有名なのはNeptuneというシーフードレストラン。ボストン在住の人々に聞いても『絶対に行って！』というほどの人気ぶりです。予約不可なので2-3時間は待ちますが、名前をリスティングさえしておけば、順番に電話してくれます。私もとりあえず名前だけ残して、周辺観光していたらちょうど良かったです。

One of the most popular restaurants is Neptune Seafood Restaurant.  Even local people say, “You must go that Restaurant! It’s worth the wait!” You will likely need to wait approximately 2-3hours in general since they won’t accept any reservations but they call you once you get a table. So, what I did was just drop off my name on the waiting list and continued sightseeing until my table was ready.

結局のところ3時間程待ちましたが、待つ甲斐はありました。　ホアホアのロブスターロールはもちろん、新鮮なオイスターやホタテもすごく美味しいのでオススメです。　味付けも上品で、また来たいな～と思えるレストランでした。

It was very much worth the wait. In addition to the most fantastic lobster roll, other seafood such as oysters and scallops are epic! I would love to return to this restaurant – I highly recommend it.

ニューヨークからショートトリップがしたいなあ、と思ったら是非とも一度はボストンへ！
