ニューヨークで食べるべきスイーツと言えば、外せないのがカップケーキ。これでもか!というくらい甘くて、可愛らしいアイシングがなんともアメリカンな感じです。 今でこそ、ニューヨークにはカップケーキ専門店が溢れかえっていていますが、ベーカリー(パン・ケーキ屋さん)も美味しいカップケーキを作っていることが多いのをご存知ですか? 味に関しては後者のカップケーキの方が私は好きです。
カラフルで可愛いアイシングについても語りたいところですが、今回は甘すぎず、重すぎず、口当たりも良いカップケーキがあるベーカリーと、カップケーキについてちょっと小話。
One of the must-try sweets in New York is the cup cake. I really taste “America” in its excessive sweetness and beautiful icing. Although there are numerous specialty cupcake shops in the city, some general bakeries actually make them better.
I know that some people are fascinated with fancy cupcake icing art. However, I would like to focus on different aspects of cupcakes; texture and flavor. Not too sweet, not too heavy, and great mouth feel. Yum!
まずは、Two Little Red Hens. アッパーイーストにある人気店で、地元の情報誌にも、何度となく取り上げられています。 当初は、ケーキ目当て(かなり評判が高い♡) に訪れた私でしたが、一緒に買ったカップケーキがとても美味しくて、大ファンになりました。サイズはちょっと大きめでも、アイシングとスポンジのバランスがとても良いので食べやすいです。 大人気のケーキ、Brooklyn Blackoutのカップケーキバージョンもありますし、色々食べてみたい方にはミニサイズも用意されているという徹底ぶり。食べ過ぎ注意です。
First of all, I’d like to introduce you Two Little Red Hens. It is a popular bakery located Upper East Side and it has been featured in local magazines and news stories many times. I originally came here to buy a cake since that’s what they’re famous for. However, the cupcake I bought together with the cheesecake was much more delicious than I expected! The size is kind of big, yet you will finish one easily because it has such a good balance of icing and sponginess. They have cupcake version of their famous Brooklyn Blackout cake, too. Although they are selling mini cupcakes, please enjoy responsibly. Don’t eat 10 of them at once.
Next is DONNA BELL’S that’s located Midtown. You can walk to the bakery from Times Squair. Since they are normally devoted to baking other things, we can only find a few kinds of cupcakes each day. Their decoration may be super simple but you won’t be disappointed by any of their cupcakes. All of them have a magical balance of sweetness and softness. Just because people buy them in the morning, so they sell out by the afternoon sometimes. I really wish they would open a specialty cupcake shop.
Those 2 bakeries are local to New York, so try them while you’re here. Of course, their scones and muffins are delicious, too.
ところで初めてカップケーキがアメリカで流行し始めたのは19世紀頃で、大きなケーキを焼くよりも短時間で簡単に作れるというのが当時の人々には革新的だったのだとか。材料の計量が全てカップでできるというのが名前の由来の一つだとも言われているそうです。(他説も有り。) 今のように色々なレシピやアイシングが盛んになったのはわりと最近のことなのですね。By the way, cupcakes were developed in the United States in the 19th century, yet people around that time were focused on the simplicity of the recipe and the time efficiency. According to some articles, it’s named “Cupcake” because the ingredients used to make them could be measured out by the cup. (There are other theories, too.) It is only very recent that “cupcake” come to imply a decorative hobby.
